From Lake Manyara and Tarangire to the northern Serengeti's Mara River, the Ngorongoro Crater and a Maasai lodge near Arusha.
This seven-day safari explores northern Tanzania in depth. After a day in Lake Manyara or Tarangire, you cross the Ngorongoro highlands into the Serengeti and travel north through the Togoro plains to the Lobo Hills and the Mara River, where the migration herds face crocodile-filled crossings in season. Return via the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive on the crater floor, then end with a night at a Maasai-run lodge near Arusha, joining guided walks, spear throwing and craft lessons.
Ideal for: Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers who want time in the northern Serengeti, especially during the migration season, as well as couples and families.
Full-day game drive with a picnic lunch in Lake Manyara, famous for tree-climbing lions and flamingos, or Tarangire, where the river is lined with acacias and baobabs and rare species such as greater kudu and fringe-eared oryx occur. Dinner and overnight in the Karatu area.
Drive through the misty forests of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the Serengeti, with an optional Maasai boma visit or Olduvai Gorge stop on the way. Dinner and overnight in the Serengeti.
Game drive through the central Serengeti, then north across the Togoro plains and the Mbuzi Mawe kopjes, seeing everything from dik-diks to elephants and giraffes. Dinner and overnight in the northern Serengeti.
Explore the Lobo Hills and the Bologonja and Wogatende areas down to the Mara River, home to hippos and Nile crocodiles. In season, with patience and luck, you may witness wildebeest and zebras crossing the river. Dinner and overnight in the northern Serengeti.
Game drive back through the Serengeti by a different route, with chances to see cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and lions, then continue to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Dinner and overnight.
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive among its Big Five, black rhinos and hippos. After lunch, drive to Africa Amini Maasai Lodge near Arusha, a Maasai-run luxury lodge, for dinner and overnight.
Join Maasai-led activities such as guided nature walks on traditional medicine, spear throwing and handicraft lessons. After lunch, transfer to Arusha or the airport.
Accommodation: Lodges or tented camps in Karatu, the central and northern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, plus Africa Amini Maasai Lodge, or similar.
